Research examining recovery modalities across different ages and competitive levels reveals which strategies show promise for supporting players’ post-exercise recovery. Understanding the evidence behind common recovery techniques helps practitioners tailor approaches to individual needs and contexts.

Our latest systematic review — led by the U.S. Soccer Research & Innovation team in collaboration with The Ohio State University — analyzed 41 studies involving 685 soccer players across youth, collegiate, semi-professional, and professional levels. The review highlights that post-exercise recovery methods can effectively enhance physical and psychological restoration in soccer players, although the strength of evidence varies across interventions. It provides an evidence-based overview to support coaches, practitioners, and athletes in selecting appropriate recovery strategies within the soccer context.
